Have you ever thought about starting your own business (or side hustle)?

You know – becoming your own boss and doing your own thing?

If you said “Yes” to yourself – #Girlboss is a book you should totally dig into.

I’m not really into reading a book right now…

No problem!

Today I’m gonna share with you the book-summary and 5 awesome business secrets I learned from the book…

…so you can take in the book’s best juicy, smart lessons without having to read it yourself.

Ready to become a #Girlboss? Let’s get started.

What is #Girlboss about, anyways?

#Girlboss is kinda like a hybrid between a business-book and a memoir.

It tells the true life-story of how the author, Sophia Amoruso, founded “Nasty Gal” –

A super popular online fashion brand, with nearly $300 million dollars in sales.

She did it when she was 23, btw.

I made a video explaining the core story behind #Girlboss:

Ready to learn how she did it? Let’s do this.

Lesson #1:

Dream big, but start small

Backstory:

When Sophia first started Nasty-Gal, she had no money, no education and no business experience.

Building her own fashion website or writing a full blown business plan seemed miles away from where she was at at that point of her life.

So instead – she chose ebay.

Was it perfect? No.

But it allowed her to focus on what matters…

  • Making sales
  • Getting better at taking pictures
  • Learning what her customers loved
  • etc.

…and to start doing business and making some cash-dollars.

Biz Lesson Learned:

In business, you don’t need to start all fancy, but you do need to start something.

So think about the simplest and easiest way for you to start doing business in the most hastle-free way possible.

  • Wanna become a famous Youtuber? – Stop stressing about your camera,
    And just start shooting videos!
  • Wanna become a relationship coach? – Don’t stress about biz cards.
Just grab a lonely friend and coach her.
Then – share what’s happening on your social accounts.
  • Wanna start your own shop and sell your stuff? – Just open an ebay, Amazon, or an Etsy account, and start selling stuff!

I can do this allllll day, but… you get the picture.

Lesson #2:

Stick to the “Do-Test-Improve-Repeat” formula

Backstory:

When Sophia started selling her vintage finds on ebay, she didn’t really know what typa clothes will sell and which won’t.

So what did she do? She simply started testing things, and noticed what type of clothes her audience responded to.

  • If something sold well – She looked for more stuff like it to sell next.
  • If something didn’t sell well – She would not touch anything like it with a ten-foot pole ever again.

Biz Lesson Learned:

The tricky thing about business is that you can never know in advance what will really work and what will fail.

For example:

  • What kind of videos will people wanna to watch?
  • What kind of products will people wanna buy?

You just don’t know.

So instead of “researching” and “planning” until you’re like 70
(only to realize all this stuff you had in your head doesn’t really work in real life) –

Just go out there and start taking action!
Start shooting those videos. Try selling a product.

Eventually something you’ll try will catch on, and you’ll know that you found your golden goose.

Bonus Tip:

Don’t get attached to whatever it is you’re trying to sell.

Instead – allow your audience to tell you what they like to buy,
and do more of it!

Lesson #3:

Forget about the stuff you suck at

Backstory:

Sophia was never good at “doing school”. So going to college to learn her favorite topic, photography, was something she knew she just can’t possibly do.

So instead – she decided to use her love of photography in a different way –

She chose to combine that with her natural sense of style, and to make a business out of it!

Biz Lesson Learned:

Forget about the stuff you suck at, and instead – Focus on your strengths.

This will be the kinda stuff that comes naturally to you, and that you can spend hours geeking out on.

The rest is just a waste of your time, and you will never be able to keep up with it anyways.

Bonus Tip:

How do you find your strength?

Simple – Just get out there and try a bunch of different things.
Eventually something will stick out and you’ll know this is it.

Lesson #4:

Don’t waste your time trying to fit “the norm”

Backstory:

When she first launched her ebay store, Sophia made sure her store is nothing like the other stores selling vintage fashion on ebay.

She started with the name – While every other store was named stuff like “Spirit Moon Raven Sister Vintage”, she named her store “Nasty Gal”, after one of her favorite Betty Davis songs.

That was the way she got herself to stand out and become way more successful than all the other stores.

Biz Lesson Learned:

In business – success is all about standing out and being different. being YOU.

So whatever you do – Don’t waste your time trying to copy what other people are doing.

Instead – try giving whatever it is you do a unique spin that just screams “you”.

Just like my boyfriend did, for his Yoga business:

A post shared by Idan Kirshner (@idankirshner) on

Yep. He’s a real yoga teacher.

And guess what..? People are crazy about him.

Lesson #5:

When you don’t know something – Figure it out.

Backstory:

Nasty Gal grew quickly, and Sophia had to learn how to keep up.

Pretty soon she had to learn how to manage stock, hire employees and even learn her business numbers.

How did she figure it out?
By using the best “learn anything” strategy in the world: She Googled it.

Biz Lesson Learned:

Don’t freak out or cry over something you don’t know, because running  a business means you’ll have to do a ton of stuff you have no clue in. Especially when you’re just getting started.

So keep it simple: Whenever you come across something you’re not sure about, just Google it, and figure it out. You can do this. You’re a #Girlboss.
